ARCHIVE · NEXT WORLDResonance: The Magic of Ilyndor
Discover the mechanics of Resonance in Resonance Portal Wars: the Temporal, Spatial, and Physical strands of magic, leylines, and the threat of Decay.

This archive entry explores Tier A clearance lore from the Resonance Portal Wars universe, detailing the fictional magic system at the heart of the novel.
The Lifeforce of Ilyndor
The foundation of power in the world of Ilyndor is not cast through arbitrary incantations, but drawn from the very earth. Resonance is the lifeblood of the planet, a network of energy coursing through invisible currents known as leylines. Before the cataclysmic event known as the Sundering, these leylines flowed like rivers of fire, balancing the elemental forces of the world.
To the orcs and elves who wield it, Resonance is a sacred pact with the past. It demands discipline, intention, and an iron will. During a high ritual to open a gateway, the Orcish shaman Balfur Skullrend guides her warriors with a simple truth:
"This is not magic. This is memory. This is the lifeblood of Ilyndor."
This memory allows skilled practitioners to bend the laws of physics, space, and time, provided they can withstand the immense physical and mental toll.
The Three Strands of Resonance
Resonance is divided into three distinct frequencies or strands. A practitioner who masters more than one is exceedingly rare and is known among the orc clans as a Seeker.
Physical Resonance This strand manipulates the tangible, material world. It amplifies a warrior's raw strength, speed, and durability. The spell Harden channels physical Resonance to coat a fighter or their mount in a shimmering green energy, rendering them as durable as forged iron. Physical Resonance can also anchor chaotic magic to the earth or ignite runed weapons. When the orc chieftain Durgar wields his axe, Bloodsever, the physical Resonance embedded in its runes drinks the energy of the fallen, turning the weapon into a brutal extension of his own vitality.
Spatial Resonance This is the mastery of distance and dimension. Practitioners use this strand to fold space, warp battlefields, or form the very boundaries of a portal. By twisting the dimensions around them, an experienced shaman can fracture distance entirely, hiding an entire vanguard in thick, disorientating fog. Elven mounts, the majestic winged Leorin, naturally channel Spatial Resonance, their wings faintly glowing with the energy that allows them to traverse the fractured planet.
Temporal Resonance The manipulation of time and perception. Those attuned to this frequency can anticipate enemy strikes before they happen, slow the movements of their foes, or project echoes of memory to reveal unseen terrain. The Elven Vanguard commander Lithariel uses Temporal power to rewrite the rules of sequence. By throwing her legendary spear, Solaryn's Beacon, she can bend enemy spells backward before they strike.
Primary Nodes and Mana Wells
Resonance requires a source. Leylines carry the energy, but they pool in concentrated zones known as Mana wells. These powerful nexuses act as amplifiers for elemental forces. Deep beneath the earth lie Primary Nodes, ancient crystalline fragments that sustain the leylines' flow. Without these nodes, the magic would dissipate into the ether.
However, Ilyndor is a dying world. The Sundering shattered the Great Pattern, severely damaging the leyline network. Where the energy ruptured entirely, it left behind Mana Scars—jagged chasms where magic hisses and bleeds, completely destabilised. Spells cast near a Mana Scar are incredibly volatile, and the lingering distortion acts as a warning to anyone foolish enough to draw too heavily from the broken earth.
Rituals, Spells, and the Resonance Slug
Practical combat magic relies heavily on these strands. The Eye spell projects an ethereal green orb into the sky, feeding the caster's mind with tactical layouts and enemy positions through Temporal echoes. When Balfur rides her Grimfang alpha, Flaget, she uses physical Resonance to bind the beast to the buried energy nodes deep beneath the forest floor.
Yet Resonance also has bizarre, highly engineered applications. One of the most unsettling is the Resonance slug. When a captive SS commando is interrogated by Grom'Karn warriors, Balfur employs a writhing, black, segmented slug. Pressed against the ear, the creature dissolves and burrows beneath the skin, releasing a sharp jolt of harmonic energy. It binds to the host’s nervous system, translating languages thought-for-thought and creating a direct psychic conduit. It strips away the language barrier entirely, replacing it with the terrifying clarity of absolute comprehension.
Element 115 and the Threat of Decay
The arrival of the Third Reich introduces a catastrophic threat to Ilyndor’s fragile magic. The SS scientists power their interdimensional Bell Gate using Element 115—a copper-gold, wedge-shaped crystal found buried in the Antarctic ice.
Element 115 possesses an unnatural ability to amplify Resonance, but it corrupts everything it touches. It leeches the purity from the leylines, twisting the magic into a profane, engineered frequency. As the Nazis force open the Die Glocke portal, the foreign energy grinds against Ilyndor's natural balance.
If left unchecked, corrupted Resonance degrades into its final form: Decay. This is not simply a spell, but a total collapse of physical and magical structure, where matter unravels and thought dissolves. It is described by those who sense it as being like a star collapsing into a black sun. The elves of Cormanthor fear that Element 115 acts as a parasite, weaving black, smoke-like tendrils into a victim’s veins and slowly unwinding the threads of time that hold them together. When Lithariel confronts the reckless abuse of this power, her warning is absolute:
"You cannot control what you do not respect, Balfur."
Echoes of Two Worlds
The conflict proves that Resonance is not limited to a single planet. When the Orcs step through the portal into 1941 Poland, they immediately sense dormant leylines sleeping beneath the Earth's soil. The realization suggests a forgotten history linking the two worlds. The Nazi engineers believe they have harnessed the ultimate weapon, but they fail to understand that they are playing with a living force—one that remembers, judges, and fights back.
Mysteries of the Weave
The introduction of Element 115 into Ilyndor's leylines raises disturbing questions. Why does this alien metal synchronise so perfectly with Resonance, only to corrupt it? Who—or what—placed the crystalline wedge in the ice, knowing it would amplify these hidden leylines? And if Earth and Ilyndor both possess this ancient energy network, did the two worlds touch before the Sundering?

Frequently asked
What is Resonance in the Resonance Portal Wars?
Resonance is the lifeblood of Ilyndor, an ancient energy flowing through invisible leylines. Skilled practitioners can draw upon it to bend the laws of physics, space, and time.
What are the three strands of Resonance?
The three frequencies are Temporal, Spatial, and Physical. Most warriors master only one, but rare individuals known as Seekers can control multiple strands simultaneously.
How does Element 115 affect magic?
Element 115 acts as a parasite that amplifies Resonance but inherently corrupts it. Prolonged exposure twists the leylines into a destructive force known as Decay, causing matter and thought to unravel.
What is a Resonance slug?
It is a writhing, black creature used by orc shamans to bridge communication. Once applied to the ear, it burrows under the skin to translate languages directly into the host's mind.
