ARCHIVE · NEXT WORLDBalfur Skullrend: Shaman-Chief of Grom'Karn
Explore the history of Balfur Skullrend, the fearsome orc shaman-chief who bent time and space to cross into Earth and confront the SS.

Note: This article explores the fictional lore of Mike Rawson’s novel Resonance Portal Wars — Book 1, covering events from the first half of the story (Tier A safe).
The Shaman of Grom'Karn
In the fractured, dying world of Ilyndor, leadership is rarely inherited. It is seized, tested, and paid for in blood. At over eighty years old, Balfur Skullrend has ruled the Grom'Karn clan longer than most orcs live. She did not take the title of shaman-chief by right of birth, but by emerging victorious from countless duels to the death. She carries the evidence of her survival on her flesh—a deep, jagged scar on her side marks her narrowest victory, a permanent reminder of the day she forced her will against fate itself.
Balfur is a Seeker, a rare practitioner who commands both Temporal and Spatial Resonance. While other shamans rely on brute elemental force, Balfur manipulates the very fabric of reality. By tapping into Temporal Resonance, she can warp perception, anticipate a rival’s strike before their blade even swings, or weave echoes of past events into the present to confuse her enemies. When she pairs this with Physical Resonance, casting spells like Harden to turn her warriors’ skin as durable as forged iron, she becomes an unparalleled tactician.
She is never far from Dreadspike, a heavy staff carved with ancient runes that pulse with green and silver threads of magic. And she is never seen without her mount, Flaget. A massive, jet-black alpha Grimfang with faintly glowing crimson eyes, Flaget is a beast of pure feral fury. Balfur broke and tamed the creature in the deep, dangerous forests of Shirteg, binding it to the buried energy nodes deep beneath the soil. Their bond is one of primal dominance, forged in a contest of wills that left both rider and mount permanently scarred.
The Alien Intrusion
Ilyndor is a world choking on its own atmosphere. A green haze hangs over the sky, the twin moons cast sickly light, and the land is torn by Mana Scars—the devastating aftermath of the Elves' reckless magic during the Sundering. But when a new, violent burst of green fire erupts in the sky, Balfur recognises immediately that it is no natural phenomenon.
Using a Primary Node buried beneath Grom'Karn’s ancient standing stones, Balfur tracks the disturbance. It pulses with a cold, engineered precision entirely foreign to Ilyndor's chaotic leylines. She rides out with her second-in-command, Durgar, and a war band of Grimfang riders to intercept the intruders.
They find a small unit of heavily armed humans who look nothing like the Elves or any known enemy. Following a brief, violent skirmish, Balfur takes a prisoner: SS Commando Tomas Leber. To extract his secrets, she employs a black, writhing Resonance slug. Pressing the parasite to his ear, it burrows in, bridging their minds through a brutal harmonic jolt. Balfur forces her magic inward, peeling away the soldier's mental defences.
Through Leber's agonised memories, she sees the steel cities of Earth. She witnesses the pulsing crimson glow of Die Glocke and senses the corrupting, alien hum of Element 115 powering the rift. The interrogation exacts a heavy toll—Balfur suffers a nosebleed as her body rejects the foreign magic—but she gains the vital intelligence she needs. The human portal is flawed, relying on vast amounts of uranium and remaining open for a mere eight minutes.
The Resonance Chain
Armed with the knowledge of Earth's coordinates in the cosmic Pattern, Balfur resolves to take the fight to the invaders. She brings her warriors to a sacred Mana well, a powerful nexus attuned to Ilyndor’s elemental forces. Here, she begins the arduous ritual of opening a gate from their side.
As she chants, green and silver light flares. Spatial Resonance folds the dimensions inward, while Temporal Resonance stabilises the violently fluctuating energies. To anchor the portal, she demands her warriors join their voices and their physical strength to the leylines.
"This is not magic. This is memory. This is the lifeblood of Ilyndor."
The orcs form a physical chain, gripping one another’s shoulders to combine their Resonance into a single harmonic frequency. Balfur takes her place at the head of the line. Knowing they are stepping into a world of machines and metal, she leads her people through the shimmering glass-like surface of the portal, crossing the vast void between dimensions.
The Confrontation
The transition is abrupt and sickening. Balfur and her war band step out of the void and into the subterranean laboratory of Project Riese in the Owl Mountains of Poland. The air reeks of machine oil, ozone, and the oppressive, corrupted hum of Element 115.
Their arrival triggers absolute chaos. Sirens shriek and strobe lights bathe the steel walls in crimson. German guards raise their weapons, but Flaget and Durgar strike first. The alpha Grimfang crushes throats and hurls bodies across the room, while Durgar’s runed axe, Bloodsever, cleaves through the human defenders.
Balfur stands amidst the slaughter, utterly composed. She weaves a distortion in time, dragging the human soldiers a fraction slower, though she immediately notices that the magic on Earth resists her—tainted and restricted by the dormant leylines and the interference of Element 115. She traps a group of terrified scientists against a wall with a Spatial barrier and points her staff at a trembling technician.
"Tell him Balfur of Ilyndor has come. He will understand."
Moments later, Hans Kammler enters the blood-soaked laboratory. The SS Obergruppenführer observes the carnage without a flinch. Balfur approaches him and offers him a squirming black Resonance slug. Kammler accepts it, pressing the parasite to his own ear.
The slug establishes a psychic link, allowing Balfur's voice to echo perfectly in Kammler's mind in his native German. She makes her position clear: the Nazis have brought destruction to her world, and she has come to ensure they understand the consequences. Kammler, ever the opportunist, sees not a monster, but an army. He proposes a negotiation, laying the groundwork for an unprecedented, uneasy pact between the Third Reich and the Grom'Karn clan.
Whispers in the Shadow
The alliance between Balfur and Kammler is built purely on mutual ambition and convenience. Kammler believes he can use the orcs as shock troops to conquer the globe and harvest Ilyndor's resources. But what does Balfur truly seek? She tells her warriors that securing Earth's technology might be the key to saving their dying planet.
Yet, there are deeper questions surrounding the shaman-chief. Her father once warned her that blood magic takes far more than it gives. Is Balfur beginning to flirt with darker, forbidden arts to secure her people's future? And how long will Durgar, a warrior bound by strict codes of honour and combat, tolerate taking orders alongside men who rely on machines rather than strength?
As the war escalates across two dimensions, Balfur Skullrend remains the terrifying architect of Grom'Karn’s fate. Whether her gamble will save Ilyndor or ensure its final destruction remains to be seen.
