ARCHIVE · NEXT WORLDLeorin: The Winged Elven Mounts
Discover the Leorin, the lion-bodied, eagle-winged Elven mounts that channel Spatial Resonance in Mike Rawson's alternate history novel Resonance Portal Wars.

This archive entry explores the Leorin mounts from Mike Rawson's novel Resonance Portal Wars, detailing their magical properties and combat roles, containing safe early-book lore (Tier A).
Beasts of Sky and Silver
In the dying world of Ilyndor, warfare is not waged on horseback. The Elven Vanguard, holding the line against brutal Orcish raids and the sudden, terrifying arrival of German mechanised infantry, rely on a mount that is as much a weapon of magic as it is a beast of muscle. These are the Leorin.
Rawson introduces these creatures with striking visual clarity. In the novel, an Elven patrol moving through the decayed forests of Cormanthor is described vividly:
Each sat astride a Leorin, majestic creatures with the bodies of lions and the wings of eagles. Their silver manes caught the moonlight, shimmering like liquid metal.
To a reader on Earth, the description immediately conjures images of the griffin from ancient mythology—a hybrid apex predator commanding both the earth and the sky. However, in the reality of Ilyndor, the Leorin are entirely natural to their environment, evolved to survive in a realm governed by the flow of magical energy. They are massive, powerful creatures with golden eyes that scan the desolation of their world with acute intelligence, and they purr with a low, rumbling vibration that their riders find deeply comforting in the cold of the night.
Conduits of Spatial Resonance
What truly separates the Leorin from mundane beasts of burden is their innate connection to the magical currents of their planet. In Resonance Portal Wars, magic is treated as physical and spatial memory, divided into three strands: Temporal, Spatial, and Physical.
The Leorin are naturally attuned to Spatial Resonance. As the Resonance of Ilyndor was shattered during the catastrophic event known as The Sundering, the leylines that once safely crisscrossed the planet became unstable, bleeding raw and dangerous energy into the atmosphere.
Navigating this ruined landscape is perilous. The novel explicitly outlines why the Leorin are so vital to the survival of the Elven patrols:
These mounts were more than beasts; they were conduits of Spatial Resonance, their wings faintly glowing with the energy that allowed them to traverse great distances and navigate the fractured leylines of Ilyndor.
By channelling this energy, the Leorin can warp the space around them, moving with impossible silence and speed. They do not merely fly over the landscape; they ride the broken currents of magic, their glowing wings acting as sails catching the unseen winds of reality itself. This makes an airborne Elven patrol extraordinarily difficult to track, let alone shoot down.
The Sacred Bonding Rite
The relationship between an Elf and their Leorin is profound. The novel notes that bonding with a Leorin is a strict rite of passage for every elf of age. This ritual forges a partnership that is described as being "as sacred as it was powerful."
This is not the breaking of a wild horse, nor is it the domination of a predator. The Elves of Cormanthor view magic and nature as forces requiring deep respect. A Leorin chooses to accept its rider, and their minds and magical resonances become intertwined. The beast amplifies the rider's abilities, and the rider directs the beast's raw power. To lose a Leorin in battle is to lose a piece of one's own soul, and the creatures demonstrate fierce, unyielding loyalty to the Elves they have chosen.
Astra and Lithariel
No Leorin in the archive features more prominently than Astra, the magnificent mount bonded to Commander Lithariel of the Elven Vanguard.
Lithariel is a warrior burdened by profound grief. She lost her husband, her sister, and the pristine beauty of her homeland during the Sundering. In the desolate aftermath of that cataclysm, Astra serves as far more than just a means of transport. The novel describes the creature as a "living tether to the past she carried into an uncertain future."
Through decades of brutal skirmishes, sudden losses, and fleeting victories, Astra has been Lithariel's constant shadow. When the Commander stands at the edge of jagged cliffs, looking out over the rotting plains of Ilyndor, it is Astra's steady warmth beneath her gloved hand that grounds her. The bond is entirely mutual; Astra senses the Commander's sorrow and rumbles in response, a silent promise of protection.
Shadows in the Trees: The Panzer Ambush
The tactical superiority of the Leorin is put to the ultimate test when the Third Reich establishes a foothold in Ilyndor. When German Lieutenant Rainier Voss leads a column of Panzer IV tanks into the ancient Elven forests, he expects the superior firepower of twentieth-century steel to easily crush the local resistance.
He drastically underestimates the synergy between the Elves and their mounts. When Lithariel springs her ambush, she does not order a blind cavalry charge. With a single clenched fist, she signals her warriors, and the Leorin immediately melt into the cover of twisted roots and dense undergrowth. Astra emits a low, almost imperceptible growl, her golden eyes locking onto the iron beasts.
Because the Leorin can manipulate Spatial Resonance, they move without disturbing the brush, positioning their riders for devastating strikes. When the forest floor itself turns against the Germans—swallowing tanks whole into the earth—the Leorin provide the speed and agility the Elves need to strike and vanish before the confused soldiers can level their machine guns. The German invaders are left screaming about forest spirits as the Elven cavalry dismantles their armoured column.
A Contrast in Cavalry
The majestic nature of the Leorin stands in stark contrast to the mounts utilised by the Orcish war bands. Where the Elves ride creatures of light and spatial harmony, the Orcs ride the Grimfangs—horse-sized wolves with crimson eyes and a feral hunger for flesh.
The Grimfangs are brutal, territorial predators. While they share a bond with the Orcs, particularly with shamans who bind them to buried energy nodes through blood contests, the relationship is fundamentally built on dominance and violence. The dichotomy between the two creatures perfectly mirrors the ideological divide between the surviving factions of Ilyndor: the Elves seek to preserve the broken balance of the world, while the Orcs seek to conquer whatever is left of it.
Echoes Across Two Worlds
In our world's history, the griffin remains firmly locked in the pages of mythology and heraldry. But in the universe of Resonance Portal Wars, the collision of reality and legend is imminent.
As the Nazi war machine pours through the Bell Gate, expanding their dark operations across the dying plains of Ilyndor, the Elves are forced into a desperate counter-move. Commander Lithariel and Captain Aelar Silverbreeze cross the dimensional threshold, stepping directly into Winston Churchill's underground war room in London to forge an alliance.
With portals now linking the bombed-out streets of 1941 Europe to the magical forests of Cormanthor, a tantalising question hangs over the conflict. Will Astra and the other Leorin eventually cross the rift? The prospect of these silver-maned, eagle-winged predators taking to the skies over Earth—dodging the cannon fire of Luftwaffe Messerschmitts while riding the latent, sleeping leylines of our own world—promises that the war for reality has only just begun.
