ARCHIVE · NEXT WORLDGrimfangs: The War-Wolves of Ilyndor
Discover the lore behind Grimfangs, the horse-sized war-wolves of Ilyndor ridden by orc chieftains and Skorzeny's SS in Resonance Portal Wars.

This archive page details events and lore from the first half of Mike Rawson’s Resonance Portal Wars — Book 1 (Tier A). Real historical background is clearly separated from the novel’s fiction.
Predators of a dying world
In the fractured realms of Ilyndor, survival demands adaptation. The orc tribes have long relied on brute strength and shamanic magic to hold their ground, but their dominance on the battlefield is often decided by their cavalry. They do not ride horses. They ride Grimfangs.
Monstrous in scale and unnervingly intelligent, Grimfangs are wolves the size of draft horses. Their thick, coarse fur ranges from slate grey to jet black, and their eyes glow with either golden or crimson light—often a reflection of the Resonance magic that saturates their harsh environment.
To face a Grimfang charge is to face nature’s unchecked fury. The beasts possess a terrifying mix of primal instinct and tactical awareness. They do not merely blindly attack; they hunt, outflank, and track their prey with a territorial musk that marks their presence long before they strike. In combat, they can endure staggering amounts of physical damage, brushing off conventional blows and shrugging off small-arms fire with unnatural resilience.
Flaget: The Alpha
Not all Grimfangs are equal. Among the packs, alpha beasts rise through sheer physical dominance and a deeper connection to the planet's leylines. The most infamous of these is Flaget, the colossal mount of Balfur Skullrend, shaman-chief of Grom’Karn.
Flaget is a towering, jet-black brute whose crimson eyes glow faintly with Resonance. The bond between rider and beast is not one of simple domestication. Balfur broke and tamed Flaget in the dark, hostile forests of Shirteg. The process was a brutal, primal contest, forging a bond in blood and scarring that tied the beast to the buried energy nodes deep beneath the forest floor.
When Balfur rides into combat, she often uses her Physical Resonance to cast Harden over her war band. The spell infuses Flaget and the other Grimfangs with iron-like durability. Under this enchantment, the beasts become nearly unstoppable shock cavalry, able to shatter defensive lines and absorb lethal blows.
In the novel: Skorzeny’s "New pets"
The true horror of the Grimfangs becomes apparent to Earth’s forces during Operation Tilt in June 1941. When Die Glocke opens a stable gateway between Earth and Ilyndor, SS Obergruppenführer Hans Kammler strikes an uneasy alliance with Balfur. Part of this dark pact involves sharing resources—and weapons.
Captain Jack Phillips and his elite British No. 4 Commando team infiltrate occupied Normandy to assassinate Otto Skorzeny. Moving through the dense forests near the Château du Broutel, they encounter tufts of coarse fur wedged into tree bark far too high for any normal animal.
Their ambush is turned against them. Skorzeny and his SS commandos have mastered riding the orc beasts, tracking the British soldiers in absolute silence. When the trap is sprung, the carnage is absolute:
A monstrous Grimfang burst from the undergrowth—a blur of muscle, fangs, and raw fury, a wolf the size of a horse. An SS rider sat astride it, black leather trench coat gleaming, death’s head insignia catching the moonlight.
The British commandos are decimated. Submachine gun fire barely slows the creatures. The Grimfangs tear through the elite soldiers with ease, snapping bones and crushing chests. Otto Skorzeny watches the slaughter from the saddle of his own beast, boasting that his unit has eradicated an entire British commando squad without firing a single German bullet.
Shortly after, Durgar, Chieftain of the Drublog Clan, emerges from the shadows atop his own massive Grimfang. The towering orc easily runs down a fleeing British soldier, demonstrating how the beasts operate as an extension of their riders' violent will.
What really happened: Skorzeny and Operation Tilt
In our timeline, the events of Resonance Portal Wars weave real military figures into supernatural conflict.
Otto Skorzeny was a real and highly effective SS commando, famously dubbed "the most dangerous man in Europe" by Allied intelligence. He is best known for his daring rescue of Benito Mussolini in 1943 (Operation Oak) and his deployment of English-speaking German soldiers behind Allied lines during the Battle of the Bulge (Operation Greif). While he certainly earned his ruthless reputation, Skorzeny never rode a giant war-wolf through the forests of Normandy.
The British No. 4 Commando was also a real unit, formed in 1940. They were highly trained raiding forces who saw intense action throughout the war, most notably during the Dieppe Raid in 1942 and the Normandy landings in 1944. The novel’s "Operation Tilt" is a fictional insertion into 1941, illustrating what might happen if elite human soldiers suddenly faced apex predators from another dimension.
Shadow Grimfangs: A darker mystery
While the flesh-and-blood Grimfangs are terrifying enough, the novel hints at something even darker. Later in the story, during the Allied and Elven assault on the Darkspire portal, Balfur Skullrend summons a pack of shadow Grimfangs to assault Commander Lithariel.
Described as "snarling shapes of pure darkness," these spectral beasts behave with the same predatory ferocity as their living counterparts but are composed entirely of corrupted Resonance magic. Their appearance raises alarming questions about the limits of Orc shamanic power.
Are these shadow beasts the spirits of dead Grimfangs, summoned back from the void? Or are they entirely new constructs, birthed from the volatile magic leaking through the Bell Gate? The exact origin of the shadow Grimfangs remains an unexplained mystery, a grim reminder that Ilyndor’s magic holds depths the Allies have barely begun to comprehend.
